Sky Cafe

Located at the top of a mountain within Wazuka Town Sports Park, this sky-high cafe is a private, rentable room built using cypress and cedar wood from Kyoto Prefecture, modeled after the tea room (Kasatei) at Kodai-ji Temple in Kyoto. Climbing the stairs to reach the cafe opens up a panoramic view of Wazuka Town.

Japanese Tea Cafe YAMAJIN

This is one of the few tea shops in Wazuka. They offer a wide variety of menu items, including homemade cafe items and single-serving tea sets (100% Wazuka-grown matcha). They grind their own matcha using a stone mill in the shop, and use it in their soft serve ice cream, drinks, and other sweets.

Hojicha jelly won an Excellence Award at the 2011 Oishinbo Contest
In May 2021, the Western-style confectionery brand "HIFUMIYOI" was launched.
They also offer Baumkuchen baked individually in-house, using organic Wazuka-grown matcha.

Midori-ya, a Japanese confectionery shop, sets up a stall on weekends and holidays in the parking lot of Lawson, the only convenience store in Wazuka Town. Their salted mochi and bean paste mochi are popular with cyclists. They also sell other Japanese sweets such as tea dumplings and hot mitarashi dumplings, as well as red bean rice, wild vegetable rice, and mackerel sushi.
They also offer complimentary hojicha tea, which is also available at the Wazuka Tea Cafe.

Kizaki, the wild boar meat shop. This famous shop is easily recognizable by the wild boar hides displayed in front of the store. In addition to beef, pork, and chicken, you can also get fresh wild boar meat here. Takeaway frozen products are also available. The most famous tea plantation in Wazuka Town is the Ishidera tea plantation. It has been designated as Kyoto Prefecture's first scenic asset, and photographs of this tea plantation are used in various tea promotions. In the Ishidera area, new houses and old farmhouses are scattered among the tea plantations, creating a scene that truly reflects the livelihoods of the people. In spring, the rows of cherry trees are beautiful, making it a spot where you can enjoy both the tea plantations that have survived the cold winter and the cherry blossoms at the same time.

Shirasu and Erihara tea plantations

The tea fields of Shirasu and, visible in the distance, the tea fields of Erihara. The tea fields of Wazuka Town extend even to the tops of steep mountains, something you wouldn't imagine just by looking up from the riverbank. The tea fields of Erihara are arranged in a patchwork pattern, following the slope, truly resembling a "mountain field." You can see them across the valley from Shirasu (there's a signpost). The tea fields in the Shirasu area offer seasonal scenery along the road, along with flowers and rice, making it a perfect hiking course.

Harayama tea plantation

If you're looking for a somewhat unusual tea plantation, check out the circular tea garden in Harayama. Wazuka town has tea plantations everywhere—even in unexpected places! You'll be impressed by the efforts of those who came before, and this circular tea garden is one of them. It offers a blend of natural beauty and the art of human creation. It's also recommended as a hiking course. Renting an electric bicycle at the Wazuka Tea Cafe is a great idea. The view of the carpet of tea fields and the townscape of Wazuka town from far below will make you forget the effort of your climb.

Kamatsuka Tea Plantation

The tea fields of Kamatsuka can be seen from Prefectural Road No. 5, the main road of Wazuka Town.
From the town center, including the Wazuka Town Tourist Information Center, police box, and post office, you can see the changing seasons of the tea fields and get a sense of the livelihood of the tea farmers. They can also be seen from the tomb of Prince Asaka and the Sky Cafe, and in autumn, you can view them from Shobo-ji Temple through the large ginkgo trees.

Miroku Cliff Buddha (Miroku-san of Nagai)

Standing overlooking the Wazuka River is a stone Buddha statue, a Maitreya Bodhisattva, carved into a massive rock. The statue, about 3 meters tall, sits atop a 6-7 meter-tall rock, and to its right is an inscription dated April of the second year of Shoan (1300 AD), indicating it was created in the late Kamakura period. It remains in remarkably good condition. It is said to be one of the few stone sculptures in Japan bearing an inscription commemorating the death of a Buddha, but above all, its silent presence watching over the Wazuka River is breathtaking no matter how many times you see it. You can even see it from the bus on the opposite bank of the Wazuka River.

Tomb of Prince Asaka

The tomb of Prince Asaka. In Wazuka town, it is known as "Taiko-yama" or "Taiko-yama Kofun." Prince Asaka was the fifth son of Emperor Shomu and died at the age of seventeen (the cause of death is said to be either illness or poisoning...). It is said that this place was used as a mausoleum for the prince who loved the road connecting Heijo-kyo/Kuni-kyo and Shigaraki Palace. Otomo no Yakamochi was a retainer of this prince, and a poem he composed in remembrance of this prince is included in the Manyoshu. My great lord, I do not think that Heaven will know him, so I see Wazuka Mountain with great humility. (Volume 3-476) A monument inscribed with this poem stands at the entrance to Katsumichigaoka Park. The top of the mountain can be walked around, offering a great view and a pleasant breeze.

Shōhōji Temple

Shōhōji Temple is a famous spot for autumn foliage in Wazuka Town. You can enjoy the peaceful view of the tea plantations of Kamazuka through the autumn leaves and ginkgo trees. It is a temple of the Eigenji branch of the Rinzai school of Zen Buddhism. It is said that in the Tenpyō era, it was built on Buppōji Mountain behind the temple, with Gyōki Bodhisattva as its founding priest, to mourn the passing of Prince Asaka. It is said that Shōhōji Temple was a large temple in its early days, but it was devastated by fire during the Middle Ages. Later, in the Edo period, it was rebuilt and moved to its current location at the foot of the mountain, and became Shōhōji Temple. Many Japanese maple trees are planted on the temple grounds, especially around the approach to the temple, and it is said that they were transplanted from the head temple, Eigenji Temple in Shiga Prefecture. In addition to the autumn leaves, the temple is also beautiful with a variety of seasonal flowers, making it a temple that can be enjoyed by the eyes all year round.

Cherry trees along Iwaibashi Bridge

The cherry blossom viewing spot in Wazuka Town is the row of cherry trees at Iwaibashi Bridge. At the end of the Kamakura period, Emperor Go-Daigo raised an army to overthrow the Kamakura Shogunate, and it is said that he traveled through Todai-ji Temple in Nara and temporarily visited Wazuka. It is said that the "Iwaibashi Bridge" was built overnight by the people of Wazuka for the Emperor and his entourage as they hurriedly moved from Wazuka to Mt. Kasagi, and the Emperor later named it. In spring, the row of cherry trees is magnificent, and the simple road makes for a very pleasant course to explore on foot or by bicycle.

The Great Cedar of Yasaka

This is a magnificent cedar tree said to be over 1300 years old (trunk circumference 12.8 meters, height 31 meters). It is said that long ago, the main trunk collapsed, and eight of its branches grew together to form this giant tree. Despite being repeatedly struck by lightning, it still stands majestically today. This cedar is a "Kitayama cedar," which is difficult to grow in relatively warm areas like Wazuka, and it remains a mystery who planted it here and why. Locally, a festival is held every year on July 7th at the Gion Shrine, which enshrines this great cedar, and there is a custom of making and eating "hanamochi" (flower rice cakes). It is registered as a natural monument designated by Kyoto Prefecture.

Wazuka Tenmangu Shrine

Wazuka Tenmangu Shrine is said to have originated in the Heian period when Emperor En'yū dedicated and enshrined a painting of Sugawara no Michizane. The main hall is a one-bay nagare-zukuri style shrine building that was rebuilt after being destroyed by fire during the Nanboku-chō period. It strongly exhibits the characteristics of the Muromachi period and is a nationally designated important cultural property. The deity enshrined in the main hall is Sugawara no Michizane. To the left of the main hall is the Wakamiya Shrine, and to the right is the Goryō Shrine. On the south side of the approach to the shrine is the Ebisu Shrine. Furthermore, if you cross the vermilion bridge to the north, you will find the Umemiya Shrine and Kumano Shrine on your left, and further in is the Kasuga Shrine from the early Edo period, which is also a Kyoto Prefecture designated cultural property. Every year on the second Saturday and Sunday of October, the Autumn Festival is held to pray for a bountiful harvest, and it is bustling with people from the town.

Washiminezan Kontaiji Temple

Kontaiji Temple is located on Mt. Jubu (685m, the highest peak in the Minamiyamashiro region) in Harayama, Wazuka Town. It is said that En no Gyoja founded the temple around the end of the 7th century, and Emperor Shomu built a hall to protect the northeast direction of Heijo-kyo and designated it an imperial prayer temple. It is considered one of the two great sacred mountains, along with Mt. Omine in Yamato, and flourished as a center of mountain religion. Currently, it is a temple of the Shingon Daigo sect, and the temple grounds contain a multi-storied pagoda (built in 1298, important cultural property) and a wooden seated statue of Miroku Bodhisattva. The temple grounds are usually closed to the public, but are opened every year on the first Sunday of September for the Great Goma Fire Ritual. A Hōkyōintō pagoda (important cultural property) is located at the summit, and it is the setting for the legend of Taichō Hōshi's "Empty Bowl Peak". On a clear day, you can see Lake Biwa in the distance.

Senkoshiyasu Jizo and Sakajiri Tumuli No. 1 and No. 2

Sightseeing

This is a stone Jizo Buddha located at Senbara Pass on the old Shigaraki Road. It was created in the mid-Kamakura period (Bun'ei 4, 1267). Below the halo, on the left and right, is inscribed "More than 2,000 years after the death of Shakyamuni Buddha, Bun'ei 22 (4), Dingmao, Monk Jikkei," and it is said that the stone shrine was made later. It is revered by locals as the "Koyasu Jizo" (Safe Childbirth Jizo), and occasionally people come from far away to pay their respects. A Jizo Bon memorial service is held every year on August 24th. Descending the road to Nagai, you will find Sakajiri Kofun. Two burial mounds remain. Burial mound No. 1 is a circular burial mound with a diameter of 12m, and a considerable amount of soil has eroded from the mound, exposing the ceiling stones of the horizontal stone chamber. It is currently used as a base for forest conservation activities, known as "Tsukaana no Mori" (Forest of Mound Cave).

Wazuka Sports Park

Activities

You can use the grounds, tennis courts, and futsal courts at Wazuka Town Sports Park. Residents of Wazuka Town can make reservations two months in advance, while non-residents can make reservations one month in advance. There is also a lawn area and a rooftop cafe on the premises.

Yubune Forest Park

Activities

Located deep within Wazuka town, just before reaching Shigaraki, this park is nestled in a lush forest and offers opportunities for river activities and barbecues. The shallow waters make it safe for young children, and it becomes a popular spot for families in the summer.

Kyoto Yubune TOPEAK MTB LAND

Activities

This mountain bike course was opened in the summer of 2013 within Yubune Forest Park. It is certified by the Japan Cycling Federation (JCF). Enduro and cross-country races are held several times a year. Please see our website for details.

Nagomi Lake (Yubune Forest Park Fishing Area)

Activities

Nagomi Lake is an artificial lake created by damming the Kurokawa River, a tributary that originates in Mikagatake and flows into the Wazuka River, with two weirs. Rainbow trout are the main fish stocked there, with other species released depending on the season. It is suitable for lure and fly fishing.

Activities

This is a satellite office and co-working space located on the second floor of the Wazuka Town Experience Exchange Center, which has been renovated. Reservations are required (up to 3 days in advance).
Usage fee: 500 yen for 3 hours (300 yen per hour for extensions), 1,000 yen for a full day.

This space offers woodworking experiences (burnt cedar plates, marquetry keychains, tea wood chopstick rests, etc.) and is a place where people from both within and outside the local area can easily interact. Restrooms are available. It is also used as a base for the Wazuka Forest Exploration Team.

Miya's Woodworking Studio

This is a woodworking studio run by Mr. Miyamura, who was captivated by the scenery of Wazuka town and established his own woodworking atelier there. The woodworking techniques evident in his woodcut portraits have been featured on the TV program "Paradise of Life." When Mr. Miyamura is at the studio, his car is parked there.
